Many of the original Pixar animators, particularly director Lee Unkrich, are massive fans of Stanley Kubrick. To subconsciously communicate to the audience that Sid's house is a terrifying, dangerous place for toys, they designed the upstairs hallway carpet to perfectly match the iconic, dizzying hexagonal pattern from the haunted Overlook Hotel in "The Shining."
