Costume designer Kym Barrett used a very subtle visual rule for the iconic sunglasses in the film. All the "good guys" (Neo, Trinity, Morpheus) wear custom sunglasses with soft, rounded, or oval frames to represent their humanity. On the contrary, all the "bad guys" (Agent Smith and the other Agents) wear rigid, rectangular, and blocky sunglasses to represent their machinelike, algorithmic nature.
