Ian McKellen hitting his head on the low ceiling of Bag End was completely unscripted and a genuine accident during filming. Instead of breaking character or yelling cut, McKellen played through the pain and let out a realistic, weary sigh before laughing. Director Peter Jackson loved the authentic clumsiness so much that he kept it in the final cut to emphasize how uncomfortable the wizard is in the Shire.
