To create the blood-curdling shriek of the Ringwraiths, sound designers recorded Fran Walsh (co-producer and Peter Jackson's wife) screaming at the top of her lungs while suffering from a throat infection. They then layered her raspy screams with the high-pitched squeals of a pig. This horrifying acoustic cocktail gave birth to one of the most frightening sounds in fantasy cinema.
