The cat sitting comfortably in Marlon Brando's lap was never in the script. Director Francis Ford Coppola found a stray cat wandering around the Paramount studio lot just before shooting the iconic opening scene. He silently handed it to Brando, who masterfully incorporated it into his performance. However, the cat purred so loudly into Brando's hidden microphone that the dialogue had to be entirely re-recorded in post-production.
