Christopher Nolan did not script the Joker to applaud during Gordon's promotion. As Gary Oldman's character received his applause from the other officers, Heath Ledger unpredictably began to slowly and sarcastically clap along from inside his cell without changing his deadpan, chilling expression. Nolan loved the creepy, unscripted gesture so much that he immediately instructed the crew to keep filming it.
