Subliminal, single-frame photos of the dead Icarus I crew flash silently on the screen to create subconscious dread.

Director Danny Boyle used a psychological editing technique to inject a hidden code directly into the audience's subconscious. As the crew of the Icarus II boards the derelict ghost ship, Boyle spliced in several single frames (lasting only 1/24th of a second) showing photographs of the smiling, long-dead crew of the first ship. It is a visual cipher that creates a feeling of being haunted without the viewer consciously realizing they saw a ghost.
