Sound designer Ben Burtt accidentally discovered the sound of the Jedi weapon by walking past an old, broken television set with a microphone. The microphone picked up the TV tube's transmission hum. He then blended that hum with the continuous buzzing of an old 35mm film projector motor to create the legendary, pulsing energy blade sound.
