Early in the film, the Three Bears are shown locked in tight cages by Farquaad's guards. Later, we see Mama Bear and Baby Bear crying together at the swamp without Papa Bear. The dark punchline is subtly revealed in Lord Farquaad's bedroom, where a bearskin rug still wearing Papa Bear's familiar tiny hat is laid on the floor. It's an incredibly morbid joke hidden in a beloved family movie.
