Denis Villeneuve added the spider imagery directly — it does not appear in José Saramago's source novel. The giant spider that materializes in aerial shots of Toronto is intentionally styled after Louise Bourgeois's monumental sculpture "Maman," a 30-meter-tall bronze spider that has become iconic in contemporary art. Villeneuve used the spider as a visual manifestation of Adam's subconscious fears regarding commitment, marriage (the web as trap), and masculine anxiety. The tarantula at the sex club opening is crushed beneath a woman's heel — representing Adam's desire to destroy the commitments suffocating him. The film layers spider web imagery throughout: electrical wires resembling webs, window cracks forming web patterns, and finally Helen transforming into a spider at the ending. The movie's recurring spider motif represents different things for each character — for Adam it is emotional entrapment, for Anthony it is his pregnant wife, for Helen it becomes her ultimate form.
