When Django is finally allowed to pick out his own clothing for the first time, he chooses a vibrant blue velvet suit with white ruffles. Costume designer Sharen Davis explicitly modeled this exact look after Gainsborough's iconic painting, "The Blue Boy." This is a brilliant piece of historical irony by Tarantino, as the original painting represented aristocratic white wealth, which Django now wears to confront wealthy white plantation owners.
