Director Ridley Scott deliberately kept the cast in the dark about the exact details of the "chestburster" scene to capture genuine shock. The actors knew the creature would appear, but they did not know about the massive high-pressure blood pumps hidden under the table. When the fake blood exploded directly into the faces of the cast (especially Veronica Cartwright), their terrified screams and disgust were 100% real.
